About the Fund

Our mission and goals

We support excellence, resilience, and mental health in the academic environment.

We contribute to making Charles University both a prestigious center of education and science, and a place where students and academics find support in their professional and personal development.

Development of Cutting-Edge Science

We provide financial support to talented students, young scientists, researchers, and academics so they can develop their potential, participate in prestigious international conferences, or carry out innovative research. We support activities that contribute to the high standard of teaching and research at Charles University.

Support for Mental Resilience

At the same time, we understand that a university is not only a place of study and research, but also a community of people who share values of education, cooperation, and mutual support—and who need help when things become overwhelming. That’s why we care about mental health and psychological resilience. We support projects focused on the well-being of students and academic staff, as well as programs that help manage stress and the challenges of today’s world.

Our goal is to create an environment where everyone can feel stable and sufficiently supported.

We also enable alumni and supporters of Charles University to contribute to the university's development and prestige through partnerships or donations.

Structure and governing bodies

The governing bodies of the Charles University Endowment Fund (NF UK) are the Board of Trustees and the Supervisory Board. The Board of Trustees currently has five members. It approves proposals for new grant calls and decides on the allocation of contributions. The supervisory body of the Endowment Fund is the Supervisory Board, which consists of three members from the Academic Senate of Charles University and the university leadership, and operates in accordance with the founding charter of the NF UK. The day-to-day operations of the Endowment Fund are managed by a team led by Director Tomáš Vokáč.

Open Sub-Funds

Currently, three sub-funds are open within the Charles University Endowment Fund:

  • The Resilience Fund

  • The Memorial Fund of Dr. Lenka Hlávková

  • The Memorial Fund of Dr. Jan Dlask

The Resilience Fund focuses on strengthening the resilience, sense of belonging, and mental health of students, academics, and university staff.

The Memorial Fund of Dr. Lenka Hlávková supports students of musicology and students who are facing tragic events in their families.

The Memorial Fund of Dr. Jan Dlask supports the academic development of students of Finnish studies and Scandinavian studies at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University, and the advancement of these fields in the Czech Republic.

Origins and History

The Charles University Endowment Fund was established at the end of 2020 with the vision of strengthening the financial foundation for the university’s key activities. Since its inception, it has been actively involved in the development of the academic environment and supports projects that contribute to excellence in education and research—primarily through grant calls.

A list of current and past calls for proposals can be found here on the website.

To date, the fund has supported 36 projects with a total value of CZK 1,247,110, focusing on talented students, students affected by the war in Ukraine, and support for students during the pandemic.

At the end of 2023, a fundraising campaign was launched to aid those affected by the December tragedy at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University. Thanks to the generosity of donors, more than CZK 88 million was raised. The Endowment Fund is distributing these funds among three groups of recipients. The final phase of support is currently underway.
