Dr Lenka Hlávková Memorial Fund

The Memorial Fund was created as an expression of deep respect and gratitude for the work carried out by Dr Lenka Hlávková.

Dr Lenka Hlávková was one of the 14 victims of the tragic event at the Faculty of Arts. Her husband commented as follows: “She always knew that she wanted to pursue music: While attending preschool, she started singing in the children’s choir Kvítek in Louny and soon began playing the violin. Later on, she regularly attended events organized by the Musical Youth group and the Summer School of Early Music. As soon as she discovered musicology, it was clear what she wanted to do with her future life: She thoroughly prepared for the entrance exam, completed her master’s and PhD studies, and then joined the Institute of Musicology as an assistant professor.”

As Director of the Institute of Musicology, she was the soul of the department. She always did her best to support students. In one interview, a student reflected on how Dr Hlávková would cope with a similar tragic situation. The response was as follows: “She would always try to bring things together and to get involved in projects that made a difference.”

We believe that the self-realization of students, their joint projects, and research activities can be a remedy to overcome demanding situations.

The objective of the Memorial Fund is to continue the legacy of Dr Lenka Hlávková. Every contribution you make will help support musicology students and students of Charles University (as well as future students) who might have difficulties studying due to a tragic event in their family.

About Dr Lenka Hlávková

Lenka Hlávková studied musicology at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague under the guidance of doc. PhDr. Jaromír Černý, CSc., first as a master’s student (1993 to 1998) and then as a PhD student (1999 to 2004). Her lifelong specialization led her to 15th and early 16th century music in the Czech lands.

In dozens of scholarly studies, conference papers, and articles published at home and abroad, she managed to put the Czech lands back on the scholarly map of early modern European music and make it an attractive research topic. Hand in hand with her academic work, she had also tirelessly devoted herself to organizational work, thanks to which she built up an extensive network of contacts for our Institute throughout the European and North American continents.

We also must mention her efforts to actively involve students in the life of the Institute of Musicology, both on a professional level and in the practice of music, without which musicology would not exist.
